Tipping in Korea: don't do it (and other money etiquette)
Quick money etiquette guide for Korea:
Tipping: NO. Don't tip. It's not expected and can be awkward. This applies to:
- Restaurants (never)
- Taxis (never, pay exact amount)
- Hotels (very rare, only luxury concierge)
- Delivery (never)
Paying at restaurants:
- Pay at the counter when leaving (NOT at the table)
- Don't split the bill — one person pays, settle later
- Calling staff: press the bell button on the table, or say '저기요' (jeogiyo)
Receiving/giving money:
- Use both hands or support your right arm with left hand
- This applies to business cards too
Other tips:
- ₩50,000 notes can be hard to break at small shops
- Keep some ₩1,000 and ₩5,000 notes for market visits
