Ikseon-dong and Ikseondong-gil: the hanok alley that became a cafe wonderland
Ikseon-dong (익선동) is a neighborhood of 100-year-old hanok houses that have been converted into tiny cafes, bars, restaurants, and boutiques. It is the perfect blend of old and new Seoul.
What makes it special:
- Narrow alleys lined with traditional Korean houses
- Each hanok has been uniquely renovated — one might be a craft cocktail bar, the next a vintage clothing shop
- Way more intimate and less crowded than Bukchon Hanok Village
Must-visit:
- Tiny rooftop cafes with traditional tile views
- Vintage hanbok rental shops (modern fusion hanbok for ₩15,000-25,000)
- Korean traditional tea houses with honey rice cakes
Getting there: Jongno 3-ga Station (Lines 1, 3, 5), Exit 4. Walk 2 minutes.
Best time: Late afternoon to evening — the alley lights create a magical atmosphere after sunset.
Combine with: Tapgol Park (historic), Jongmyo Shrine (UNESCO), or Gwangjang Market (5 min walk).
