Yeonnam-dong: the tree-lined neighborhood locals love (and tourists miss)
While everyone goes to Hongdae for nightlife, the adjacent Yeonnam-dong neighborhood is where Seoul locals actually hang out during the day.
What to do:
- Walk the Gyeongui Line Forest Park (경의선숲길) — a converted railway turned into a beautiful linear park with cafes on both sides
- Browse independent bookshops, ceramics studios, and plant shops
- Eat at cozy brunch spots and pasta restaurants (₩12,000-18,000)
- Evening wine bars along the park are perfect for a relaxed night
Food highlights:
- The area has some of Seoul's best non-Korean restaurants — Thai, Vietnamese, Italian
- Weekend brunch culture is huge here
- Craft cocktail bars that are less pretentious than Gangnam
Getting there: Hongdae Station (Line 2), Exit 3. Walk toward the park.
Vibe: Think Brooklyn's Park Slope or Tokyo's Shimokitazawa — residential, leafy, unhurried. The anti-Myeongdong.
