Korean drinking culture: soju, beer, and the art of 회식
Drinking is a big part of Korean social culture. Here's your guide:
What to drink:
- 소주 (Soju) — Korea's national drink, ₩4,000-5,000 at restaurants, ₩1,800 at convenience stores. 17% alcohol.
- 맥주 (Maekju/Beer) — Cass and Hite are the main brands. Try craft beers in Gyeongnidan-gil.
- 막걸리 (Makgeolli) — milky rice wine, best paired with pajeon (pancake)
- 소맥 (Somaek) — soju + beer mix. The go-to combo.
Drinking etiquette:
- Don't pour your own drink. Others pour for you, and vice versa.
- Pour with two hands (or support your pouring arm)
- Turn away from elders when drinking
- Say '건배!' (geonbae/cheers) before first drink
- It's OK to refuse — just say you can't drink (no pressure)
Where to drink:
- 치맥집 (Chimaek) — fried chicken + beer joints
- 포장마차 (Pojangmacha) — street tent bars
- 호프집 (Hof) — traditional beer halls
Budget: ₩15,000-25,000 for a fun night out with food + drinks
