Mangwon-dong: the foodie neighborhood tourists haven't found yet
While Hongdae and Yeonnam-dong are well-known, neighboring Mangwon-dong (망원동) is where Seoul foodies actually go. It is one subway stop from Hongdae but feels like a completely different world.
Mangwon Market (망원시장):
- One of Seoul's best traditional markets, recently renovated
- Famous for: fresh-squeezed juice stalls, tteokbokki, handmade mandu (dumplings)
- More local and less touristy than Gwangjang Market
- Open daily, best around lunchtime
Surrounding streets:
- Artisan bakeries (sourdough, Japanese-style, Korean rice cakes)
- Third-wave coffee roasters
- Natural wine bars
- Small independent restaurants doing creative Korean-fusion cuisine
Getting there: Mangwon Station (Line 6), Exit 2
My route: Browse Mangwon Market for lunch → coffee at a nearby roaster → walk along Mangwon Hangang Park (beautiful river views) → return for dinner at a local restaurant.
Why I love it: It has the energy of pre-gentrification Yeonnam-dong. Feels authentic, prices are reasonable, and you will be one of the only tourists there.
